Kitchen Things for the Non-Cook

Save time and money

I should qualify this: I do cook, and fairly frequently, but I'm not a cook. I try to make things that are healthy, but I usually don't feel like taking the time to make anything that requires more than 15 minutes. This might seem pretty limiting, but if you have the right tools you can actually cook some pretty great stuff really quickly.

If you don't want to eat out every night or spend a ton of time in the kitchen, this is the kitchenware you need to make good meals fast.

1. Garlic press

Chopping up garlic is the worst thing in the world. That's why God invented the garlic press -- you can just throw cloves in whole without peeling them and squeeze out uniform garlic nugs. Big time saver, and you'll start using a lot more garlic in your cooking, which is always a good thing.

2. Air popper

Popcorn: extremely versatile, healthy, so cheap it's essentially free, no clean up. You can't afford not to buy one of these.

3. Knife sharpener

I have no idea where I got my knives, probably from an ex-roommates ex-roommate. I do know that they are not good knives. HOWEVER, with a knife sharpener even the worst Goodwill-bought-hand-me-down can be made super effective. And they're fun to use too.

4. Crock pot

If you can plan a day ahead of time, a crock pot produce some pretty amazing food with very, very little effort on your part.

5. Rice cooker

Pour rice in, pour indeterminate amount of water in, leave and forget. This thing will take care of the rest. If you're a busy person and don't have time to babysit boiling rice or pasta, you should buy this ASAP.

6. Egg cooker

This definitely falls into the "niche appliance" category, but if you like hard boiled eggs/deviled eggs/egg salad/etc. even a little bit, it's worth getting. It makes eggs perfectly to the specified level of doneness every time, without needing someone to watch over them.

7. Keurig coffee maker

This one is more of a luxury, but if you want to save time getting out the door in the morning, or just can't wait for your coffee, this is the solution. Brews in under a minute
