Okay, maybe Jenny Colgan shares her position as queen of mouthwatering books with Joanne Harris, because Chocolat and its two sequels are absolutely delicious. The novel is about Vianne, who runs her own chocolate shop in a small French town - with the help of a little bit of magic.

5. Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel

Originally written in Spanish, this Mexican novel tells the story of Tita, who can only express herself when she cooks. The book features mouthwatering Mexican recipes, and a dash of magical realism.

6. The School of Essential Ingredients by Erica Bauermeister

This novel centres around 8 people who come together every Monday night for cooking class. They are all troubles for their own different reasons, but the food they are presented with by Lillian, their teacher, transforms them all.
