Five of the Best Books for New Young Adult Readers

New list, who dis?

Dipping your toe into the young adult pool and struggling to navigate the waters? Check out this list! All of the books here are in no particular order and are based upon two criteria: age appropriate (for younger teens) and easy to follow. I also love all of these books so I'd definitely recommend them to anyone in general.

If you love this list, check out this post I created with more recommendations for new young adults.

1. Struck By Lightning: The Carson Phillips Journal

This book is a combination of hilarious and meaningful. Plus, it has an insane plot twist at the end! It's such a quick read and the 272 pages fly by like crazy. It's a bit crude though so just keep that in mind, but really go read it if you are new to YA. It's an awesome stepping stone into the genre, so if you love humor especially this is perfect for you. Also *sidenote* it was made into a movie you could check out after you're done. I haven't seen it yet, so let me know if it's good! If you've seen Glee, the author was Kurt so prepare to experience all the feels.

2. The Haunting of Sunshine Girl: Book One

This. Book. Is. So. Good. If you're super into reading about paranormal or books with magical elements pick this up for sure. It's based on the popular YouTube series (of the same name) so if you like YouTube (which if not what are you doing) definitely watch them and if you like them read the book. It's definitely not as scary as the YouTube series, so don't necessarily get turned off because you dislike scary books and videos. I would say it's more magical than paranormal. Okay go get it: ready, set, GO!

3. On the Fence

This book will forever hold a special place in my heart because of how much I genuinely enjoyed it. It is such a fun, light romance but it also has other plot points besides what's going on between the two love interests. It is an excellent summer read as well and is certainly a quick one. If you want to try reading romance in YA this is a great place to start because it's definitely age-appropriate for a younger reader. If it looks interesting to you, go read it because I adored it!

4. Divergent (Divergent Series)

I'm SURE you've heard about this book or movie! If not, from what I've perceived it's probably one of the top three most famous YA dystopian books besides Delirium and The Hunger Games. This book had me completely gripped from the beginning and I think that it is one of the best dystopian selections for a new YA reader. In the link above, on my blog post for recommendations for new YA readers, I have another great dystopian book you might want to check out! Anyway, If you don't want to get any sleep, read this!

5. City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments)

THIS BOOK OH MY GOODNESS. IT IS BEAUTIFUL AND MAGICAL. THE NOVEL IS FILLED WITH LOVE, FANTASY AND SIMPLY THE BEAUTY OF THE UNIVERSE. In case you couldn't tell, I like this book and think you should read it.
