Animated Movies that Will Change You

Not for kids

1. Heavy Metal

You haven't seen a movie like this before. Like the title suggests, everything about this film is heavy, from animation style to the score composed entirely of deep cuts from bands like Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, and Nazareth. Partly a dystopian horror flick, partly an epic battle of good vs evil, Heavy Metal is all legendary.

2. Princess Mononoke

Princess Mononoke is a Miyazaki classic, a often violent fantasy drawing heavily on traditional Japanese folklore of spirits demons and melding it with Miyazaki's favorite themes of nature and the environment. Beautifully animated, and alternating between the serene and the cacophonous, you're not going to forget this one.

3. Ghost in the Shell

Ghost in the Shell is peak cyberpunk AND has a brain behind the tropes. The music is unforgettable, and you'll be left thinking deep thoughts about technology and identity for a long time.

4. Waltz with Bashir

All I can say is wow. This one is deep.

5. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

Exploring similar themes to Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa is a more sweeping epic, though a little less polished. The imagination of the film is outstanding, even among the films in this list, more than making up for any slowdowns in the plot.
